Join NE Volunteer Barry Probin for an evening Live Moth Trapping at the Old Works along the disused Railway Line. Using an Ultra Violet Light and a special Moth Collecting Sheet on which the moths land, it allows for easy observation of any specimens. What we catch on the night cannot be predicted so expect surprises.
The Fenn’s, Whixall and Bettisfield Mosses is home to over 100 species of moth (around 600 if you count micromoths). So expect to learn a lot about them and enjoy having a go at identification. Perhaps take a look at our species explorer beforehand to see if you recognise any. Be careful not to touch their wings as they are very fragile. Many moths are very highly camouflaged, so you will see a huge variety of patterns and colours. Moths and caterpillars are vital food sources for many birds and insects, which is why you will see a lot on the mosses.
This is a free event, but please email [email protected] to book your place since spaces are limited. Biting insects are to be expected, so bring insect repellent, we will also provide you with UV safety goggles. As always dress appropriately for the weather (this is a late event so wrap up warm), and wear sturdy footwear. Feel free to bring your own drinks and snacks. For visitors with limited mobility, it is hard to say whether you will have suitable access. This is because whilst Barry is aiming to do the trapping on the line (which is firm and hard ground), there is also a chance he might move onto the grass below.
