Great-crested newt underbelly

By: Philip Precey

Come along to the Marlot Local Nature Reserve to meet the magnificent “dragons of the pond” and learn more about newts and their ecology. Meet at the Morris Bridge carpark for an 8am start. There should be ample parking spaces available but you can also park at Roundthorn bridge if necessary. The event is free, but there are limited spaces available so please email Fergus at [email protected] to book your place.

Great Crested Newts are one of three newt species here in the UK. They are the biggest of the three species, growing up to 17cm in length. They can live up to 25 years old. The Great Crested Newt is almost black in colour, with spotted flanks and an orange belly. The pattern of black spots on its belly are unique, and can be used to identify each individual. They produce a gross substance from their skin glands to ward off predators and make them taste horrible. See if you can identify the males by their distinctive crests and the webbing they develop on their feet during mating season.

Please dress for the weather, and bring waterproofs since there will be no shelter. Wear trousers and socks as well as wellies or sturdy waterproof shoes. As a precaution, it could be a good idea to bring insect repellent, including one suitable for any children in your group. Bring your own food and drinks if required. If you have limited mobility and you are interested in coming to the event please call us to discuss your needs and we can let you know whether the site will be accessible for you.

It is 70 years since the first NNR, so join us to celebrate as part of the Festival of NNRs with Natural England.
